The plant belongs to the Pinaceae family and inhabits the forested mountain belts of Central and Eastern Europe, where it grows as a long-lived evergreen tree. The Bulgarian stands of the tree fall within the southern part of the European range. It is from Bulgaria that all the raw material for the oil comes. The raw material comprises the needles of the tree, and steam distillation carries the volatile constituents from them and gives the aromatic profile its full purity. The profile unfolds a rich and intense strength, as the fresh opening passes into a resinous and pine tone. The tone accompanies the liquid consistency of the finished oil. The consistency carries a yellowish-brown colour, which derives from the resins in the needle tissue, since this part of the tree deposits them throughout the season. Storage
