The tree is a natural hybrid between the small-leaved and the large-leaved members of the genus, and modern classification assigns the genus itself to the extensive Malvaceae family. The family unites tree and herbaceous genera from different continents. The inflorescences are picked in Bulgaria during the short summer flowering, when the floral tissues reach their fullest aromatic reserve in the crown of the tree. Each inflorescence bears a bract fused to its stalk. The bract remains a botanical feature of the genus, as it accompanies the inflorescences in all its members.
